Following a successful pilot program, Wegmans Food Markets announced that it will begin delivering meals from select stores through a partnership with delivery platform DoorDash.

The grocery store giant initially launched the service in Rochester and Virginia, with plans to launch Meals 2GO this week. The rollout calls for Meals2GO at stores nationwide by the end of the year with more to come in 2020.

“We promise to ‘make great meals easy,’ and it doesn’t get any easier than this,” Erica Tickle, e-commerce group manager for Rochester-based Wegmans, said in a statement. “What’s unique about Wegmans Meals 2GO is the variety of delicious menu options. During the year-long pilot at our Pittsford store, we listened and learned, fine-tuned the app and created a menu that had something for everyone at home or at work.”

According to Wegmans, Meals 2GO orders of $20 or more for lunch, dinner or “anytime in between” can be delivered via DoorDash in an approximate five-mile radius of participating stores. Items available for delivery include sushi, pizza, wings, subs, salads, soups, hot “wokery” ready-to-heat meals, desserts and beverages.

The orders can be placed through a smartphone app.

Earlier this month, Wegmans announced that it is in the beginning of hiring and training new staff to fill its food market that is slated to open in Harrison next spring. The chain is now seeking 220 full-time employees to staff the 121,000-square-foot grocery store.

Last year, Wegmans was named as the top place to work in retail, according to Great Place to Work and Fortune, which takes anonymous surveys of nearly 650,000 employees in the retail industry to determine which are the best employers.

It was the third consecutive year Wegmans took home the top honor.

“Thank goodness for our employees. They make Wegmans a happy place to work and shop” Wegmans CEO Colleen Wegman said. “Their work is both meaningful and fun, and that’s an unbeatable combination.”

When it opens, the new Wegmans will offer a variety of restaurant-prepared foods, including The Burger Bar, fresh salads, sandwiches, kids meals, soup, sides, and beer and wine by the glass.

“We bring new employees on board to begin training quickly after they’re hired,” Store Manager Matthew Dailor, who began working at Wegmans 25 years ago as a part-time parking lot attendant, stated. “Our commitment to in-depth training is the main reason we begin the hiring process so early. These jobs provide competitive pay with industry-leading benefits, flexible scheduling, and most importantly, a great place to work.”
